Getting started with Drag & drop builder

Mailercloud's drag and drop builder lets you create customized email templates for your email marketing campaigns. You can upload an image, change the background, update text formats, customize buttons, social media icons, divider, menu, HTML code, and even add a spacer.

To use this feature, you need to follow the following simple steps:-

Step 1: Log in to your account and choose an option called “Template Gallery” from the dashboard.

Step 2: Select "Create Template" from the top right and assign a template name

Step 3: Select the template “layout” or “theme” from the menu.

  • Layout

You can select from a list of 9 layouts, which is as shown here

  • Theme

You can choose from a preset theme or edit any of your previously created themes.

Step 4: You will be directed to the following window, where you can see 8 blocks, structures, templates on the left-hand side, and general settings for content, typography, and buttons on the right-hand side.

Step 5: Select a structure of your choice, add the required blocks, and manage content, typography, and button settings from the general settings menu over the right.

Section, Structures, and Containers

Section is the outermost region of your email template, which comprises structures and containers. Structures are the skeleton of your template design, which contains several containers. Inside a Container, you can place an image, text, button, or any other elements from the blocks menu. Based on your requirement you can select any of the 6 structures and customize them accordingly.

Selecting a section

To select a section, click on the outer region of your email template. After selecting a section you can manage the section settings like:-

  • Section background- You can change the section background from here.

  • Content background- You change the background colour of the content placed inside the section.

  • Background image- You can upload an image of size upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px, from your device or retrieve it from an external source by pasting the URL link under the external sources, drop-down menu. Hereby, you should note that the colour of the background image matches the background colour of the section selected by you. It is because, the background image may not support some email clients like Windows Outlook 2007 – 2019, Windows 10 Mail, Android 4.4, Gmail app on iOS & Android with non-Gmail account

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of your section. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on the bottom and top ends. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Border of content- You can apply a border width of upto 20 px from here.

  • Hide element- You can hide the selected element for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the section will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Selecting a structure

To select a structure, go to the structures menu, hold your desired structure and drop it into the template. After this, you can manage the following structure settings:-

  • Columns- You add and manage column width from a range of 40 to 380. You can also select an equalizer, which will assign equal widths to all the columns.

  • Indent between containers- You can apply indent upto 40 px, between on the container.

  • Background settings- You can manage the background colour and background image (upload from device/retrieve from an external source), for the selected structure. Hereby, you should note that the image size can be upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px. Also, the colour of the background image should match the structure selected by you. It is because the background image may not support some email clients like Windows Outlook 2007 – 2019, Windows 10 Mail, Android 4.4, Gmail app on iOS & Android with non-Gmail account.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of your structure. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

Selecting a container

To select a container, click on the highlighted regions inside the structure. In these regions, you can add an image, text, or button and customize it using the container settings on the right menu.

Under the container settings, you will find the following options:-

  • Background colour of container- Here you can manage the background colour of the container.

  • Background image- You can upload an image of size upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px, from your device or retrieve it from an external source by pasting the URL link under the external sources, drop-down menu. Hereby, you should note that the colour of the background image matches the background colour of the container selected by you. It is because, the background image may not support some email clients like Windows Outlook 2007 – 2019, Windows 10 Mail, Android 4.4, Gmail app on iOS & Android with non-Gmail account.

  • Border style- You can manage the border style of the selected container. You can either assign border-width proportionally or across the container like left, right, top and bottom to a maximum of 20 px, under the advanced options menu.

  • Border radius- You can manage border radius as a whole or individually under the advanced option, drop-down menu. For both cases, you can apply a border-radius of upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the selected element for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the container will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Aligning the containers

You can change the alignment of all the elements inside the container. You can align them centrally, leftward or rightward, by following these simple steps:-

  • Select the container which you want to align.

  • Select the elements inside the container that can be text, image, button, social media icon, or others.

  • Select the alignment option from the menu appearing on the right side. Based on your requirement, you can set alignment for the desktop PC or mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

Blocks and their Usage

We have 8 blocks, which include image, text, button, divider, social media icons, spacer, menu, and HTML.

Image

This section allows you to add an image to your email template design. To use this block, you need to drag the “image option” from the blocks menu appearing on the left and drop it inside your design. You can then, manage the following image settings:-

  • Uploading an image- You can upload an image of size upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px, from your device or retrieve it from an external source by pasting the URL link under the external sources, drop-down menu. Hereby, you should note that the colour of the background image matches the background colour of the container/structure. It is because, the background image may not support some email clients like Windows Outlook 2007 – 2019, Windows 10 Mail, Android 4.4, Gmail app on iOS & Android with non-Gmail account.

  • Alternate Text- You can assign a name to your uploaded image.

  • Background colour- You can manage the background colour from here.

  • Alignment- You can manage the image alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Image size- You can manage how you want an image to appear on different devices.

  • Responsive image- You can enable this feature to make the uploaded image adjust automatically as per the device screen size. However, adaptivity works according to the supported devices.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of the uploaded image. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the image for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the image will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Text

This section allows you to add text to your email template design. To use this block, you need to drag the “text option” from the blocks menu appearing on the left and drop it inside your design. You can then, manage the following text settings:-

  • Text colour- You can select the text colour from here.

  • Link text colour- If you have added a hyperlink to any of the text, then you can manage the link text colour.

  • Background colour- You can manage the background colour of your text from here.

  • Line spacing- You can add line spacing upto 2 px.

  • Personalization- You can add personalized text like first name, middle name, country, city, and others, which will be replaced with the relevant fields as per the details provided by you with that contact email.

  • Underline links- You can enable this feature to add an underline to the hyperlinked text.

  • Alignment- You can manage the text alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of the text. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the text for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the text will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Button

Buttons can be used in the email template. For this, you need to drag the “button” option from the blocks menu on the left and drop it into the template. You can assign any label or functionality to your buttons, change the button style and other aspects with a click.

  • Button label- You can add a button label here. For example, you can use the button label as "Order Now", "Sign up" or any other as per your requirement.

  • Link- You can define the functionality of the labelled button by placing a URL/Link for the same.

  • Styles- You can assign any of the button styles from the given options.

  • Full width- Enabling this feature will make the button width equal to the container width.

  • Alignment- You can manage the button alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Properties- You can manage the font type, size, colour, button colour, and background colour of the button from this menu.

  • Border style- You can manage the border style of the button. You can either assign border-width proportionally or across the button like left, right, top, and bottom to a maximum of 20 px from the advanced options menu.

  • Border radius- You can manage border-radius as a whole or individually under the advanced option, drop-down menu. For both cases, you can apply a border-radius of upto 100 px.

  • Internal padding- You can add internal space to the button as a whole or individually. For both cases, you can apply internal padding of upto 100 px.

  • Margin- You can add a margin upto 100 px to the selected button as a whole or individually.

  • Hide element- You can hide the button for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the button will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Divider

Divider allows you to separate two containers from one another. You can add a divider in between two containers, the top of the containers or the bottom of the containers. To place a divider, you need to drag the divider from the blocks menu on the left and drop it into the email template wherever required. On the right hand, you will find the divided menu and manage settings like:-

  • Style- You can manage the dividers type, height upto 40 px, and colour.

  • Background colour- You can change the background colour of your divider from here.

  • Width- You can assign divider width upto 100px.

  • Alignment- You can manage the divider alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of the divider. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Responsive divider- You can enable this feature to make the divider adjust automatically as per the device screen size. However, adaptivity works according to the supported devices.

  • Hide element- You can hide the divider for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the divider will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Social

Social media icons can make your emails more personalized and appealing to your customers. To add social media icons, you need to drag the social icon from the blocks menu appearing on the left hand and drop it on your email template. Once done with this, you can manage the social media settings from the menu appearing on the right hand.

  • Icons style- You manage social media icons' visual appearance from here.

  • Icon size- You can manage the icon size from here and assign a maximum size of 64.

  • Icon padding- You can manage the space between the social media icons proportionately from here. You can apply icon padding upto 100 px.

  • Background colour- You can change the background colour of your social media icons.

  • Networks settings- You can define the functionality of the listed social media icons or even add your custom social media icons and define their functionality from here. You can also change the position of these icons, by dragging them to whichever position you require.

  • Alignment- You can manage the social media icons alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of the social media icons. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the social media icons for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the social media icons will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Spacer

Spacer is the empty space you can apply in-between two containers. To apply a spacer, simply drag the spacer icon from the blocks menu appearing on the left hand and drop it into the email template wherever required. You can manage the spacer settings from the menu appearing on the right:-

  • Height- You can manage the spacer height upto 800 px.

  • Background colour- You can change the background colour of the spacer from here.

  • Hide element- You can hide the spacer for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the spacer will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Menu

Menu comprises all the list of items that you want to add to your email template. To add a menu, simply drag the menu icon from the blocks menu appearing on the left hand and drop it into the email template wherever required. To manage the menu settings, you can make the necessary changes from the menu appearing on the right hand.

  • Menus- You can label the menu text for all the items, add menu items, define its functionality by adding a hyperlink to it, change the background colour, link colour and hide that item for desktop PC on mobile as per your need.

  • Separator- You can add a separator between the menu items, manage the colour, width upto 20px, and type of the separator.

  • Text style- You can change the item text formats like font style, size (upto 72 px), letter spacing (upto 20 px), text-transform (uppercase, lowercase, capitalise).

  • Alignment- You can manage the menu alignment for desktop PC/mobile. However, changes won't be observed if used with the text editor alignment option.

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space of the menu items. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the menu items for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the social media icons will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

HTML

If you are an HTML expert and want to customize the template as per your thoughts, you can use the HTML editor. To add the editor, drag the HTML icons appearing under the blocks menu on the left hand and drop them into the email template wherever required.

You can enter the HTML codes into the editor and manage additional settings from the menu appearing on the right hand:-

  • Padding- You can manage the outer space for the selected elements. You can either apply padding as a whole or manage it individually on left, right, top and bottom. You can apply padding upto 100 px.

  • Hide element- You can hide the selected elements for the users accessing your email from Desktop-PC/Mobile. Here, it’s important to note that the elements will be hidden on Yahoo mobile App, as well as in mobile email apps which do not support media queries.

Create email templates with Drag & Drop Builder

To create your customized email templates, you can follow the following set of steps:-

  • Disable responsive design- By selecting this option, the email will not adjust itself as per the device screen size.

  • Default padding- You can manage the outer space of all the elements or individual elements from here. You can apply padding up to 100 as a whole or individually.

  • Background settings- You can change the background colour of the email template or content from here.

  • Background image- You can upload a background image of size upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px, from your device or retrieve it from an external source by pasting the URL link under the external sources, drop-down menu. Hereby, you should note that the colour of the background image matches the background colour of the email template. Typography

  • Default font settings- You can manage the font settings like font style, text colour, and link text colour for the entire text appearing in the email template.

  • Headings- You can change the font style, type, colour, letter-spacing, and text transform for any of the heading types in the email templates like H1, H2, H3, and so on. To apply the heading tag, just select the text and choose the tag from the text editor appearing on the top of the template.

  • Paragraph- You can manage the font size, type, colour, letter-spacing, and text transform for the entire paragraph.

  • Line spacing- You can manage the space between two consecutive lines and apply space upto 2 px.

  • Paragraph bottom space- You can manage the space between two consecutive paragraphs from here.

Button

  • General button settings- You can manage the button colour, font colour, font size, and style for all the buttons used in the email template from here.

  • Border radius- You can manage border radius for all the buttons as a whole or individually under the advanced option, drop-down menu. For both cases, you can apply a border radius of upto 100 px.

  • Border style- You can manage the border style of all the buttons. You can either assign border-width proportionally or across the buttons like left, right, top, and bottom to a maximum of 20 px from the advanced options menu.

  • Internal padding- You can add internal space to all the buttons as a whole or individually. For both cases, you can apply internal padding of upto 100 px.

Step 6: Once done with all editing work, save or export the template design, by following the steps mentioned under “Preview, Export and Save Email Templates”

Preview

We always expect you to check a review for your email template, before launching it for the target audience. To check the "Preview", follow these steps:-

  • Step 1: Click on the preview option appearing on the top of the window.

  • Step 2: You can check the desktop as well as mobile preview, as shown below.

Export

To export the email template, you can click on the download button appearing on the top right, as shown below:-

To save an email template, click on the "Save and close" button and assign a name to the email template for finding it easily in the future, which is as shown below:-

Ready to use templates

To help you design your email templates quickly, we have included a list of pre-built templates. You can select the pre-built templates from the dropdown appearing on the left-hand side, under the template section. You can select:-

  • Headers- You can select from the pre-built 11 headers from the templates menu appearing on the left hand.

  • Banners- You can choose a banner from a list of 21 pre-built banners, by scrolling from the templates menu available on the left-hand side. These banners are very effective in giving your emails a more personalized view.

  • Info Modules- You can choose from a list of 31 info modules, which are generally composed of blogs, contact details, or other options, from the templates menu.

  • Gallery- You can pick a gallery image from a list of five images or upload your own easily from the templates menu.

  • E-commerce- You can choose from 7 pre-built e-commerce templates from the templates menu on the left hand.

  • Transactional- We have a list of 10 transactional email templates, which you can use readily.

  • Footer- You can add a footer into the email template. Currently, we have 7 pre-designed footers for use. You can add a footer by dragging it from the list appearing under the templates menu and drop it into the template.

  • Signature- You can add a signature template to your email by dragging from a list of 10 pre-designed signature templates, under the templates menu.

Image, Tables, and Personalization Tag

Uploading an Image

Uploading an image is easy. You can upload an image from your device or retrieve it from an external source. However, you should ensure that the image size does not exceed 3 MB or 4000X4000 Px. Also, it is recommended to keep the uploaded image colour the same as the background colour. It is because the background image may not support some email clients like Windows Outlook 2007 – 2019, Windows 10 Mail, Android 4.4, Gmail app on iOS & Android with non-Gmail account, when used with a different background colour.

From device

You can upload an image which can be in formats like PNG, JPG or GIF with a size upto 3 MB or 4000 X4000 px, as shown

From external source

You can retrieve an image (PNG, JPG or GIF) from the external source with a recommended size upto 3 MB or 4000 X 4000 px. To retrieve, select the option “external sources” and paste the external URL in the field.

Creating a Table

Tables can help you organize volumes of information in a simplified manner. Our platform lets you add a table and customize it according to your needs.

To add a table, follow the following simple steps:-

  • Step 1: Select the text where you want to add the table.

  • Step 2: Choose the table option from the text editor menu appearing on the top.

  • Step 3: This will open the table properties menu, from where you can manage the number of rows, columns, table width, height, cell spacing, cell padding (outer space inside the cell), table alignment (center, left, or right). You can also add a caption or summary for the table, which is as shown below:-

Adding a Personalized Tag

With our personalized tags, you will never have to worry about entering your customer’s basic details like the first name, middle name, city, country, and others into the email templates.

You can simply select personalized tags using the following simple steps:-

  • Step 1- Select the container where you want to add personalized tags.

  • Step 2- Go to the personalization option appearing under the text menu on the right-hand side.

  • Step 3- Select the personalized text of your choice, like first name, city, country, or any other.

  • Step 4- This will automatically replace these tags with the relevant fields, as per the details mentioned by you for the targeted contact.

Note:- For achieving effective personalization you should update your customer's contact list with all the relevant fields.

User FAQ

1. How to create an email signature?

To add an email signature, go to the templates menu on the left-hand side of the DD builder dashboard. Select your desired email signature and customize it as per your requirement.

2. How to add/remove hyperlinks to Text?

To add a hyperlink, "select the text" and choose an option called "link" from the text editor appearing on the top and add the desired URL in the field. Similarly, you can remove the link by selecting the text and choosing an option called "unlink" from the text editor.

3. Why do my buttons appear different in Outlook?

To avoid this issue, you are required to always assign a URL to your buttons. It is because, if you do not add an URL, then, you may experience some design-break issues like a collapse of buttons, button texts, and similar.

4. What is the dark mode for emails? How to optimize emails?

There are some email clients like Outlook, Gmail, and others who are now formatting dark mode for emails. To make your email look better, always ensure that the background image selected by you matches the structure background.

5. Why can't I see the background image in Outlook?

You might not have uploaded the background image on the top of the structure or the background image colour might not have matched with the background colour of the structure. Therefore, it is recommended to always upload a background image on the top of the structure and keep its colour the same as that of the structure's background.

6. Can I edit the image in dd builder?

You can add, remove or replace an image from your device or external source.

7. How to add a background image?

You can add, remove or replace an image with a click. You can upload an image from an external source or device. However, you should ensure that the image size is not more than 3 MB or 4000X4000 px.
